Final Research Project:
Name of Artist: Cristina Hoch
Dates of Artist’s Life: 1993-Current (24 years old)
1. Personal Background:
Cristina Hoch is a 24 year old Spanish portrait photographer. She grew up in the south of Spain, near the city Granada. She has several younger siblings and has been taking pictures since early on in her teenage years. As of 2014, Cristina was studying biology at University of Granada. Because of her interest and pursuits in science, most of her pictures revolve around nature and the natural state of people. She started taking photos as a teenager as a hobby and has continued to pursue it along with her University studies.
2. Style:
Her style is known for bright eyes and dark freckles. She uses all natural light, and has a preference to high contrast photos, bringing out all the natural features of people. She enhances freckles, cheekbones, and eyes, often playing with shadows as well.
3. Philosophy:
Because of her science background, Cristina wants all of her photos to be natural. She uses all natural light, only shoots outdoors, tries to emphasize natural features. All of these factors are because she hopes to show the hidden beauty in nature. She lives in a small town by the countryside, making her environment perfect for showcasing natural beauty in all her photos. She is inspired by music and independent films, also photographers like Julia Trotti and Fanny Lambert.
4. Influences: (5 sentences. How has the photographer influenced you in your work?)
My work was influenced a lot primarily by her editing techniques. I really like the emphasis on eyes in her pictures, and through this project I figured out how to lighten up eyes and highlight them in really cool ways. I also like how she makes physical features stand out like freckles and cheekbones. I hope to use similar methods in my own future work, but in different ways to add to my own unique style.

For each of my images I did my best to mimic the poses and techniques of the corresponding one by Cristina, but naturally there were some big differences. The biggest one is my model (my sister Caroline) does not have as noticeable and easily edited freckles, so the emphasis on freckles didn't appear in any of my versions. Concerning the specific photos, the background in Cristina 1 was very different than my rendition. Hers had a darker mood as it was in the rain on a street, as opposed to mine which was on a sunny day in front of bright colors. The second photo highlights the eyes in both, but her photo makes the girls freckles stand out. In Sweet Salt Air, theres a similar angle and feeling, as both are close up of a young girl from above. I used the eye brightening and saturation techniques to make them the focal point, but again the emphasis on freckles is lacking in mine, and the difference in hair and eye color changes the photo quite a bit. My series of photos portrays a lighter story, as the hues are brighter and the contrast is less intense than in Cristina's photos. Both however put similar perspectives on a young girl and attempt to showcase their personalities through natural qualities, like their eyes.
